(Old-Time White Bread)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (not hot)
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp oil or melted lard
  • 1 tsp salt
  • About 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Melted butter (for brushing after baking)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Wake Up the Yeast

  1. Stir the warm water and sugar together in a mixing bowl.
  2. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top.
  3. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes frothy and foamy.

2. Mix the Dough

  1. Add the oil (or melted lard) and salt to the yeast mixture.
  2. Stir in the all-purpose flour a little at a time until a soft dough forms.

3. Knead

  1. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
  2. Knead for 8 to 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.

4. First Rise

  1. Place the dough into a greased bowl.
  2. Cover and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

5. Shape & Second Rise

  1. Gently punch down the dough.
  2. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased standard loaf pan.
  3. Cover and let it rise for 30 to 45 minutes.

6. Bake & Finish

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  3. Remove from the oven and brush the top of the hot loaf with butter while warm.
